Sorters > X-ray sorters
For the detection of foreign material in packed products, or the
detection of embedded foreign bodies in bulk products, the IXUS
x-ray sorter offers the best solution. As opposed to the former
optical sorting techniques, x-rays have the ability to travel through
an object, depending on its density. When an X-ray source is placed
on one side of the product, and X-ray sensors on the other side,
the X-rays that pass through the object can be measured, and variations
in density can be detected. A piece of metal wire or a small rock
will absorb more X-rays than a raisin or a nut, creating a clear
contrast between the good product and the foreign object. A big
advantage of X-ray sorters compared to metal detectors is that X-rays
can be used to inspect the inside of packages packed in aluminum
foil. On top of that, the advanced image processing technology used
in the IXUS makes shape recognition possible for the detection of
missing items and pits in stone fruits.
